Instructional Design for
Law Enforcement Instructors

There is more to creating training than making an outline, a slide deck, and a multiple-choice quiz. In many instructor certification classes, this is all that is taught. If you are like most instructors, you have felt that there has to be more, but don’t know where to start.

In fact, these are just three small steps within an industry called Instructional Systems Design. When done right, well created training establishes consistency, continuity, and accountability. These three factors can help make your training, agencies, and instructors more defensible in liability issues.

Instructional Design for Law Enforcement Instructors is a 40-hour course that will introduce you to the world of Learning and Development. You will discover that not only is there a process to creating training, there is science, research, and methodology behind that process. This course will take you through the steps of creating training with the ultimate goal of training products that follows learning science.

Some of the topics covered in this course are:
–Performing analysis, including a task analysis
–Developing a Training Design Plan
–Creating effective and measurable performance objectives
–Creating instructor and participant guides and slide decks
–Creating rubrics and scenario control documentation
–Developing defensible tests that have content validity
–Creating evaluation tools that measure course efficacy

This course is not 40 hours of lecture: this is a hands-on, intense course where you will create or redesign a course using the processes and methodologies delivered. By the end of the course, you will have either a complete short course or the beginnings of a longer course partially completed.

Hybrid structure – some Instructor Led (synchronous), some self-guided (asynchronous)

Material development is asynchronous with fewer hours spent as a cohort online. While the asynchronous portion does not require participants to be online, the instructor will be present online during the regular scheduled times to provide assistance. The VILT version also provides one-on-one time that participants can schedule for additional help.

Everyone will receive templates and examples to aid in your course development. You will need a laptop or computer with Microsoft Office. Be prepared to discuss on the first day of class the training topic you want to develop that interests you or is needed in your agency.

Just like learning, our training support doesn’t end when everyone leaves on the final day. We provide continued support to our participants while they put into practice the skills and processes they learn in this course. This course was 30 years in the making – we don’t expect our participants to be ready in 40 hours.

Participants of LETnEC courses will receive continuing support for as long as they want/need it at no additional cost.* Participants are invited to set meetings with their instructor to discuss their training materials and programs after they receive their certificates of completion. LETnEC instructors remain permanent consultants as participants go through their career changing the standards of how law enforcement training is designed and developed.
